multimaster for floors

I salvaged almost 1000 sf of solid walnut flooring, (free!!) and may get the Fein Multimaster to get the adhesive and leftover stuck plywood off. Any good or bad feedback on this tool? Other ideas, maybe I should use a chemical stripper instead, or in addition to, a power scraper-planer? Cheers-

My garden hose has a small hole. There's enough good hose to stretch around my garden, seems like a waste to throw away the whole thing. Is there a tool/fitting I can buy, and just cut the hose at the hole, and re-attach a sprayer fitting?
thanks!

Mine -- being struck in the back of head (lower occipital) with a belt sander New Year's day.

Hard lesson as to why tools should not be left on ladders. I had been sitting on the roof sanding the eaves (it's easier to hold than lift), and set the sander atop the ladder. I climbed down, and left the ladder for a few minutes. When I returned to move the ladder, I had forgotten the belt sander was sitting on it at roof level. I was bending down, lifting the 4 legs, when -- WHAM! I was knocked out!

yup, blood...but I wasn't sure what had just happened! (memory thing). 8 stitches near the base of my skull. And a sheepish rendition of my violation of one of the basic rules of construction -- DON'T PUT ANYTHING ON THE TOP OF LADDERS! WHich my husband reminded me he had told me over and over...

the lathe
what a freaking awesome tool and what a blast to turn wood for the first time and oh no now I think I need another new tool or several!

I'm not sure what I wanted to "discuss" per se, I just wanted to gush a bit.
ok I'm done now.

Hey y'all my name is Katie, and I'm looking for a smart, kind, rockin lady like yourself to teach me the ins and outs of welding. I've been interested in welding for quite some time; unfortunately I haven't been able to come up with the funds for classes yet. So I propose a trade. You: teach me (either by apprenticeship or by doing a few sessions of welding together), and I: worship the ground you walk on/ provide any of my services (cooking, catering, teaching gymnastics, planning, organizing, and whatever else you might need!).

Message me and let me know. I can't wait to hear from all of you!

Does anyone know how long it takes for latex paint to outgas? I know this doesn't involve (necessarily) power tools but the people on this site seem to have all the good info. I'd use to low VOC paint but I'm moving into a rental house and they already painted. Ugh. Thanks for any info.

My back yard is about 20 x 50 feet, a little more than half is flower-bed-type space, the rest is paved patio. I plan on picking up a bit more of the concrete that the previous owner put down, she wasn't much for gardening, I managed a very pretty crop of flowers this year.

I compost in one corner-kitchen waste mostly. Last year, a buddy pruned my tree, and I composted most of the leaves and smallest branches, but I still have a fair amount of dead wood left that I absolutely cannot burn. One neighbor wants to take one of her trees down, another wants to prune hers severely and I want the debris for more compost. I also usually get a live tree that I would compost after christmas.

All the professional tree service co's have equipment that is too large to get into our yards-behind attached houses with no driveway.
I've looked around for a chipper-type device, and since I know very little about them, didn't see anything that seemed to meet my needs. I want to grind the branches down to sawdust, then plow it into the soil.
I'm willing to make the investment, can anyone suggest a machine that can handle this? Almost like an industrial-strength food processor. What sort of power do they need?
Much obliged, power chicks,

My front door is stuck. I'm able to get in and out of the house by the basement door.
The front door's unlocked, but the triagular-shaped thing that goes in and out when you turn the knob won't go, and I can't turn the knob. I can't open it from the outside, because the storm door is locked by the same latch -the button to release it is pushed to lock, even with the key.
I suspect the recent rains have swollen the wood door and its frame, but I really would like to avoid calling a locksmith. Any suggestions?

Channels change, the remote turns it on and off, but I have no picture. I just hate throwing something away if it can be fixed. How do I tell if it's the picture tube or what?

TOU

Incredibly draconian and perhaps the most censurious of all the online communities'.

Flagging

My best friend posted pics of US soldiers who had died in Iraq, and maimed Iraq civilians. The former were flagged, and removed, no notice given or discussion offered. The horribly maimed Iraq citizens weren't deemed offensive, apparently. I wonder if the staffer who removed the pics looked at the pics to either side of the soldiers, or even read their own TOS?

New format

It sucks. It's just designed to net more views of different ads, not ease of use or fun. Nothing has been changed even though every comment I've read -- and there are a lot -- has been that the Tribe community hates it.

I had hung around hoping that something new would show up to take its place, but can't stand this anymore. Tribe is now administrered by uncaring, unresponsive, beaten-down, passive-aggressive staff and the self-righteous fanatics who have time to flag, flagrantly feeding their egos. There has been no improvement or even a slight halt to its downward slide. This is not something I want to contribute to anymore. My thanks to all the folks I used to talk with…and I hope ya'all will think on whether it's worth it to support Tribe as it is now.

Hey-heY!

I got my Pramac ES5500 5.5Kw (bio)diesel electric generator out of my truck, prepped and *BOOTED* today all by myself! The generator started up about as rough as expected and once 'up', it ran *GREAT* for about 2 hours crankin' BIG ELECTRIC LIGHT into my front yard. Woo-hoo! Damn, grrl! Now there's a power tool that'll power all my power tools. And now I can set up my sound system *ANYWHERE*! Bwahahahaha! My band will be unstoppable! Cool.

Maybe we should change our name to "The Unstoppables"...

Rockin' with my gennie,

P.S. Any guitarists out there in Portland lookin' for a band? Message me!

Not my foredom grinder, not my belt sander, not my scroll saw, but some jackass snapped the hatch to my truck and yanked my tool bucket. I just priced all of the tools he got and it's going to cost me at least $250 to replace them with lower quality tools. The worst of it is that they got my rock hammer. It's from the 50's, rusted, and has a freyed strap. To everyone else it's a piece of crap and I'm sure it's been dumped by now.

The lamest part is that it belonged to my first and best mentor. He died when I was 15. Silly as it sounds that hammer represented something to me and those fuckers will never get that.

I'd trade my truck for it.

Does anyone know what kind of drill bit to use while drilling through ceramic sculpture and if so where could I get some? I have tried masonry bits and it didn't work- this is high fired clay. The bits I'm looking for are 3/16 and 1/4. Thanks for any ideas.

hello tribers
this is a personally hand-typed request for your help
not an automated advertisement looking to generalize...

The Art Exchange: what do you need? what do you want to get rid of? Or are you just looking for some extra cash, some inspiration, or bargain gratification? You don't need to be an "artist" to enjoy this space, it is more on the level of an indoor flea market that has whatever you need and may also have a movie playing on a giant projector screen, or a buffet of tainted goodies.
We are trying to encourage people to re-evaluate their garbage. Most of us at the Art and Found warehouse are dumpster divers and see how much people waste every day. I don't know about you, but I'm sick of paying for things that I only use once, or paying a tax on something that is already overly priced.

WHAT IF... We didn't need money for anything but food and rent? What if all the things you want to buy along the way, you can get by trading something you are about to throw to the curb? Imagine if this idea took off, and eventually you could barter a deal with your landlord and get out of paying rent. Think of the people you would be connected with, the events you would hear about along the way, and the elimination of stress over being poor.

The Art and Found: Its a warehouse in West Oakland filled to its brim with pretty much everything/anything: clothes, furniture, instruments, tools, computers, bikes, car parts, costumes, ART SUPPLIES, craft supplies, collectibles, jewelry.... I mean everything. And its the place you can sell your stuff at, and its the place you can call if you are looking for something to buy at a cheaper rate, and its the place that is going to hopefully take back what we have invested in capitalism so we can start living off the waste of it instead.

I'm getting pretty excited

As a start... Become a member of the Art Exchange Tribe
Call us if you need something/want to sell something...
(518) 435 5924
check it out with your own eyes: THIS SATURDAY!!! And every Saturday
Open Flea Market from noon to dinner time
THANK YOU FOR READING THIS long ass thing

Olivia Royale
Director of the Art Exchange

Hi, new to this Tribe, looks like there's some skill and talent here.
Last year, I bought and renovated with a GC an attached brick row house in NYC. We replaced 2 bathrooms and a kitchen, some copper pipe went in, some PVC for the waste lines.
I have long hair, so does my daughter, and we need to snake out the drains about once every 6-12 months. I've had a plumber here, can't afford to use him for maintenance. He told me he'd gone down 30 feet to clear the clog on the first floor, so I figured 50 ft would be long enough to clear from the second floor.
Any reccommendations on brands, where to buy? And tips for using? I'm all for ordering it online if possible. I hate Home Depot.
Thanks

quick rant-
aargh! every boyfriend I've had uses my tools and never puts them back OR tries keep them and pretend they are his.

one boyfriend chizzled (sp?) his initials into my cool old hammer, broke my drill and never replaced it. last night, I found that my current boyfriend stole my phillips and flathead "to keep in his bike bag, so we'd know where it is" as if looking in my tool box for my tools is unusual.
The Madagascar Institute presents:

Clean!

Come to the Madagascar Institute on Saturday, November
6th and help
spin order out of chaos by cleaning the shop. It will
be dirty, it will be a whole lot of work, but it will
be fun and a great thing for you to do.
The Madagascar Institute prides itself on being an
open system, a place where
anyone (meaning: you) can just walk in off of the
street and become an artstar by showing up, shutting
up, and working. We realize that practically, this is
hard, since we all come off as some kind of mean,
elitist art gang. If you always wanted to be a part of
the Madagascar Institute but were put off by that
sleazy guy or that mean girl, this
is the perfect opportunity to plunge right in to the
level playing field
of cleaning, the dirty, annoying, so so important
thing that you already know
how to do, the thing, that by virtue of everyone
hating, instantly forges bonds of comradery thru
shared labor and common perseverance in the
face of overwhelming filth. You will discover that the
scarred art pirate/master welder chick/expert costume
maker and party thrower is just a huge nerd, just like
you, and that you have bonded in the best
possible way, in the forge of shared labor and
annoyance.
As if this was not enough there are two big perks:
-Help clean, and be rewarded wih a free class session
(class details below)
-Help clean, and get to witness the glory that is
JETBIKE!. "JETBIKE!"?, you ask.
Yes, JETBIKE! It is a big, propane-powered, jet
engine, powering a
motorcycle, glowing red and louder than god. It is
glorious, and you
will get to witness it, and learn how it works, and
maybe even touch it; and the inevitable Jet Frenzy
coupled with your artstardom from the
cleaning will get you so,so laid we cannot be
responsible for the inevitable, sex-related injuries
that you will incur.

Cleaning starts at 2 pm on Saturday and goes until the
JETBIKE! sings.

ShopKat will be available all day dispensing bites and
scratches. But
only to the people she likes.

*******************************************************************
November and December Classes at Madagascar Institute
(See the end of the email for shop hours, etc)
Now, thanks to the tireless efforts of Jeff, Julia and
Caution, the
Madagascar website now lists classes.
And you can reserve your spot and pay for them there.
http://madagascarinstitute.com/classes.htm
or email classes@madagascarinstitute.com
********************************************************************
Sat. Nov 6, 2 pm-?
Shop Clean-up, Free.

Not a class, per se--more like an event. Yes, an event
that involves cleaning the shop, upstairs, downstairs
and in the backyard. So if you've ever wondered what
the crafty downstairs is SUPPOSED to
look like, or ever wondered what is living under the
welding table out back,
come on down and help us clean. If you have NEVER been
to Madagascar Institute
before and come help us clean this saturday, you will
get a voucher for a free regular-priced class. Come
get bossed around by Anney Fresh--for free!
This is an offer too good to refuse!

*********************************************************************

Sat Nov. 13, 6pm
Beg. knitting with Kristen $20
plus materials fee--you will leave with needles and
yarn.

Kristen will teach you how to know a very basic scarf.
If you've never knitted before it may end up just a
potholder, but it will be the
nicest potholder ever. If you have alittle experience,
or are very good with
your hands, then you will be able to knit a scarf. She
is very patient.
Unless you're really retarded. But I will be taking
the class, so you won't be the biggest tard there.
All I know is that Kristen went to Ireland a few weeks
ago, and decided she needed an Irish cable knit
sweater. So she just made herself one.
She knits like that.

**********************************************************************

Wed. Nov. 17, 7:30 PM
Beg. MIG welding with Kim! $20

MIG welding--our most coveted class. This is the
class that made us famous and it's still only $20. A
deal at twice the price!
Learn the basics--how to prepare the steel to get a
solid weld, why you won't get electrocuted, why you
shouldn't look into the spark, the
latest welding fashion...All the important stuff.
And if the stars are all aligned properly, you'll
learn how to make a
nice shiney weld.
Prepare yourself for the rare INTER MIG welding the
following weekend,
and arc and oxy-acet welding that will be coming up in
the future.

*********************************************************************

Sat Nov 20, 1 PM
WELD BETTER! with Hackett $20

Yep. You heard it right.
Due to popular demand, Hackett is finally teaching a
welding class.
This is INTERMEDEATE MIG WELDING. In other words, you
already have to
know how to weld. At least alittle. Or be really cute
and a really fast learner.
No seriously--you have to have taken the beginning
welding class or
welded before. This is why:
He will probably not tell you why you shouldn't weld
stainless steel,
or why you have to open the window, or have you start
with a cleanly ground piece of steel because you get
a nicer weld. Because you already know all
this.

********************************************************************

Sat. Nov 20, 2 PM
Beginning Sewing with Maureen. $20

You know Mo. She is the world famous Madagascar
Institute knot tying champion. But did you know she
can sew too? Learn how to sew a simple item. It may be
a throw pillow, or a pillow case, a tote bag or a
tampon case, but guaranteed: It will reqire a
button. And that is worth the 20 bucks alone!
Learn how to follow a basic pattern, how to sew a
straight line, the machine basics, and how to properly
sew a button and ghetto button
hole. She will be using
the classic teaching manual, "Sewing with Sherry"

***********************************************************************
December classes:
Times and dates below--detailed description to come.
dues-paying
member
of
Madagascar Institutue, classes are free. So pay your
free to come down and learn by being a helper monkey
on someone else's project. It's a good way to learn.
Sometimes there's beer.

I am moving two large plants from one container indoors to the great out of doors. They have lived together for 12 years that I know of. Any suggestions to get them apart and survive the move? They have grown to my ceiling several times and are so fat it takes a hack saw to cut them down to they need to be free.

Who wants to come with me?

Madagascar Institute Presents: Summer School!!!

That's right kiddies--just in time to sweat your butts off, we have the
classes for July:

Pre-Registration REQUIRED by emailing Kim!
at classes@madagascarinstitute.com

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Beginning MIG welding with Hans! $20
Saturday July 10, 1-4 pm

Learn how to cut, grind, and weld up some steel. Learn what not to do as
well. This class will cover the basics of MIG welding--that's the wire
feed
kind. If you do it right, you may be rewarded with Professor Hans, cool
cucumber of Mad Inst, stroking his facial hair and saying hmmmmm--looks ok
to me.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=
Basic Autoshop with Albert
and his lovely assistant Tara. $20

Saturday July 17th, 12-3 pm (TENETIVE)

Learn the basic car stuff. Maybe how to change your oil, plugs, and belts,
or how to fix whatever's wrong with either Albert's car, Tara's van, or
the
Artstar truck. All and any will be useful. More info later. Prepare to get
dirty....

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Beginning sewing with Sherry $20/$30*
Saturday July 24th 1-4pm and Wed. July 28th, 7:30-9:30

Learn how to make a bag or something simple. Sherry will supply you with
an
awsome handbook telling how to do it the best half-assed way you possibly
can. You will leave knowing how to follow a pattern (!!!) and how to sew
something. Use our material, our beads, string and buttons....
That will be on saturday and cost you $20. If you want to come back on Wed
nite to finish your project, or practice or learn more or just hang out
and
drink beer, you can. It will cost you another $10.
(*You can come ONLY on saturday, but you CAN'T come ONLY on wed nite.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Oxy-acetylene welding with Kim! $20
Saturday July 31st, 4-7 pm

Oxy-acetylene is the torch-kind of welding. Some people call it
brazing--come learn the difference. Learn how to turn on and off the
tanks,
how to adjust the regulators, how heat and bend steel, and how to weld.
You should probably have either taken a MIG or other welding class before
or
at least not be afraid of fire. But it is not neccessary. Wear real shoes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
REMEMBER: If you are a dues-paying member of Madagascar Institute, classes
are FREE. So pay your dues. To become a dues-paying member, all you have
to
do is pony up the cash ($40.00/month) and clean up after yourself. And
empty
the garbage or other monkey jobs. And get along with Shop Kat.

Madagascar Institute
217 Butler St btwn Nevins and Bond, Brooklyn
Shop Hours: Tues/Thurs 7-11, Sat 3-9 pm-ish
718-222-1416
http://www.madagascarinstitute.com

You can pay in CASH at the shop or use CREDIT through pay pal. Also,
please
feel free to send us money for no reason.

I am starting a garden at my gf slopy, hilly back yard and am looking for places to get ideas for terrace gardens and how to's.

Plants need to be for SF climate. Trying not to spend a whole lot, just make a pretty place to sit.

Any good recommendations?

I have managed to be in the business where I was always having to use powertools- Once I was working for a circus and my boss- the assitant tent master noticed I was in a particularly vile mood- i had cramps and was bitching- he decides I need to go and drill some holes in a some steel tubing- Well I hate the job of drilling into steel especially when the second layer hits and the drill torques and you jam your wrist- He is standing by laughing-so I start a screaming and chasing him down with the drill - It was all in good fun .... the moral of the story Never give an angry woman on the rag a power tool .

I read this on the NYC Burning Man List from Tara Fire Ball.
Make soaps...Bench Building and WELDING!

Thanks nice lady!

Madagascar Institute Classes *** NEW CLASSES FOR FEBRUARY ***
PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR ALL CLASSES
To pre-register, email Kim at agent064x@yahoo.com.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-Soap-making
with Veronica.
Saturday February 7th, 2 pm. $20.00

Yes, this class is back by popular demand--just in time for the next
annoying gift-giving and relationship-ruining holiday.

Make soap for your sweetie. Or for your landlady. Or your smelly roommate.

You will learn to make soap and bath salt, and get a super cool arty
hand-made soap dish for your soap. (Made by a real local Gowanus Artiste)
Bring a jar for your bath salts. We have all kinds of scents, including
tobacco--which is more like your old Grandpaís cherry pipe tobacco scent
rather than ìNo, I wasn't smoking--what makes you say that?" scent.

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR ALL CLASSES
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Basic bench building with Mark.
Saturday February 7th, 4:30 pm $20.00

You too can pay to be our monkey!
Learn how to do basic building stuff: Use a drill, circular saw, measure
wood. This is a class for beginners. Mark will teach you how to make a very
basic table and bench out of plywood.

"How high is your basic chair? How do I measure with a T-square? How do I
keep from cutting my leg off with the circular saw?"

If you have asked yourself these questions time and time again, itís
probably time to take your pill and change the bandages on your stump.

But if youíd like to get a little practice in helping Mark build some
benches while learning about tools, wood and measuring this class is for
you! (You donít get to keep the benches you make today, but you can come
back and build them on your own another day--possibly a WARMER day--included
in the price of the class!)

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR ALL CLASSES
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Intro MIG Welding with TBA
Thursday, February 12th, 7:30 pm $20.00

Intro to MIG welding with TBA
Saturday February 28th, 2 pm $20.00

This class is so awesome that thereís always a waiting list. In fact, both
classes are probably both half full already!
Impress your friends and neighbors with your cool new skills. This class
can be taught by any one of our excellent, capable, attractive teachers,
but this month it will be taught by whoever we can rope into it.

Learn the basics, including why you shouldnít stare directly into the arc,
whatís the difference between galvanized and non-galvanized steel and most
importantly, how to rock that leather welding apron like an ArtStar.

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR ALL CLASSES
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
REMEMBER: If you are a dues-paying member of Madagascar Institute, classes
are FREE. So pay your dues.

To become a dues-paying member, all you have to do is pony up the cash

The lawnmower went bad on me the other day so yesterday I took the fucker apart and went and bought $8 worth of parts. I replaced all the gaskets and the fuel line, cleaned the entire engine, replaced the primer bulb and now it runs like a dream. I was impressed because I have never worked on a mower before. :) Sadly though no power tools were needed, and I have the ryobi 8-pack, which is pretty new, which I am constantly looking for projects to use it for. But I still feel great about my mower.

I'm looking for women in the D.C. Metro area that know how to handle there tools or dont mind learning. I am the assistant director at a local community theatre as well as some freelance work and I'm looking for a few good women to be stagehands/crew so that I can round out my predominantly male crew.

If your a woman in the area and you wanna come down and make some extra cash or you just wanna learn how to use your tools a little better drop me a message. NO experience required, just an open mind to learning and consideration for safety.

I'm a master technician by trade and i do a little over 300 shows per year. I prefer to have a good population of women on my crews because they are less accident prone then most of my guys. (Theres something about power tools and testosterone. Maybe one too many episodes of home improvement).

In any case I'm the shop foreman and I've taught stageworks at the local comm. college. I dont tolerate discrimination or teasing or hazing. It's serious work, but we have serious fun as well.

cheers,
the dr.

They lack the cachet of power tools, but we all use them; refridgerators, microwaves, toasters, blenders, Hitachi magic wands...

Don't write them off as merely domestic, they can come in handy for other things. A blender is good for pureeing potatoe beetles to discourage them from your garden. A cheap food processor whizziz table scraps into fine chicken feed. A tagsale waterpic is just the thing to blast out those smelly seashells you picked up on the beach last summer. And an electric carving knife? Nothing sculpts foam rubber and styrofoam like an electric carving knife. That and a hot glue gun and acryllic spray paint, and Red Grooms stand aside, you can make anything from a Godzilla costume to life-sized saguaro sculptures.

If you could only have one appliance, what would it be?

So...when I was like 19.
I went to visit my dad in his new house...I realized he lived across the street from a crypt.
So I went over there and investigated and found out that there was this big ASS lock on it...too big for little ol' me to kick or pull or smash with a rock off...
so I went back over to my dads and asked him for a bolt cutters...
Now the thing about my dad is that he remembers when I had a bon fire in his kitchen in a chili pot...and the time I drove his Geo like a go-cart all over town...
So he Says to me
"Kass, what the Hell are you going to do with that bolt cutters."
and I reply sweetly..."Well dad..there has been this dragging noise under my car and I think I need to go and cut some shit off of it...(87 Toyota tercel that was HIT BY A BUS) and so he totally bought it...and HANDED ME THE BOLT CUTTERS
as I walked outside I turned to see my dad watching in the window...and as I crossed the street and walked into the cemetery...I saw his face drop and his eyes widen...
and as I clipped the LOCK OFF the crypt I watched him shake his fist at me...
Closing the door behind me, my dad stood at the top of the steps..."you're a SHITHEAD" he said and took the bolt cutters from me.
How does this thing work?

I just got a dremel. I was planning to use it to carve details in plaster molds for decorative tile. (Like, say, tentacles on a jellyfish.) I'm having a hell of a time controlling the thing. All my carving efforts have been like drunk driving. Whoaaaaaaa!!!

Anybody experienced with a dremel? Any suggestions?

OH and a soup can

Speaking of my dad...and my car...
I realized that driving through fields in LOW cars is not a good idea...you usually end up missing parts from under the car when you are finished...
So this one night after I was done driving around in a big field I noticed that my car was a bit louder then it had been before...
when I crawled under it to inspect i found that I had pulled the catalatic converter off...

well shit...a SOUP can would work perfect.
So I went over to my dads place and ransacked his house...and when he got home he found that he didn't have any more Bean'n'Bacon soup...but my car was quiet as a humming bird...
