Re: What have you built?
Wed, January 14, 2004 - 8:30 AMWell I didn't necessarily build anything in this story, but randomly was forced into using a circular saw because nobody else would. So here is the story posted at Dana's request.
This past October, I attended a volunteer Haunted Trail event (or the preparation meeting for it anyway). At this event, a large piece of press board had to be cut in half. All the guys were looking at each other like... duh.... do I have to do this? I told them to get me two 5 gallon containers. We balanced the piece across them, and I proceeded to show all the men how to cut a piece of wood precisely in half with a circular saw. What dumb asses! Do we have to do everything? We have to give birth to our children and cut wood in half! Geesh!

Wed, January 14, 2004 - 9:20 AMCurrent project is stripping the paint off of the molding in my house and staining it like the wood it used to be. Next would be to replace my kitchen and bathroom sinks.
Last real usage of tool was to install a garage remote on two of my motorcycles that click into the highbeam headlight. Still have one more bike to get too.

Re: What have you built?
Thu, January 15, 2004 - 1:11 PMI do it all, it seems... from laying tile floors with the mikita to hanging dry wall with the cordless drill. I've built shelving and zoetropes and used a big hammer to knock all the plaster off a nice brick chimney in the kitchen, then buffed it all down with the mikita angle grinder. looks nice. I've installed toilets and showers, new plumbing, even a gas stove. I've wired new light fixtures. I built a large fence (big enough to keep the horses in) across a large meadow using a PTO powered post pounder on the back of a tractor. now *that* is a power tool. I've also ripped a couple fences down with the tractor, I tell ya, nothing like a power tool you can actually drive. so much fun. I am a Jill of all trades and a master of none. ok, maybe one.
what about manual tools? what about us girly girls who like to put on a pair of greasy coveralls and a wife beater (no bra) and linger over the engine getting our hands dirty? there is nothing like the clickclickclick of a good solid ratchet tightening your new alternator to your engine block. sooooo satisfying. -

Re: What have you built?
Thu, January 15, 2004 - 4:47 PMWell the biggest thing I helped build was a house. One of my friends uncle is a contractor and he needed help bulilding his own house. I had no problem in rolling up my sleeves and lending a hand. I've built different sets for theatre, tiled my bathroom, built floor to ceiling bookshelves, etc. I love starting from a pile of supplies to ending up with something useful.
I would have to agree about manual tools and working on a car. This past fall I helpped a friend rebuild his transmission...(actually I did most of the work he had no idea what he was doing). That was lots of fun. -

Re: What have you built?
Thu, January 15, 2004 - 10:49 PMI haven't build anything recently. I took a carpentry class a long time ago which was a waste of time. I had too much trouble beating off the stupid guys to learn anything.
I have built shelves, and used various power tools and equipment but nothing in the past few years.
Hey angelina, I'll be your bitch anyday! :-)

Re: What have you built?
Thu, January 15, 2004 - 11:32 PMI'm gutting and rebuilding my house, one room at a time. I'd intended to hire the work out, but then my carpenter fell off the wagon, took 6 weeks to fuck up and half-finish a 4-day job, and I had to fire his ass. I bought that cordless Ryobi 5.5" circ saw/drill kit the next day and haven't looked back. (Yes, I'm doing mostly non-structural stuff or I couldn't get by with the mini saw, but as it is, it's perfect.)
So I built my bedroom closet and cabinets, a non-bearing wall between the bedroom and the living room, and redid most of the living room (still in progress). My house is freaky. It has no studs. It's made of 1x12 planks running vertically. Took forever to find a structural engineer who could tell me if it was falling down or not.
My favorite tool is probably the air compressor. -

Fri, January 16, 2004 - 3:23 PMMy girlfriend and I insulated (easy but itchy work) and drywalled (ow) our 20'x40" studio which has FOURTEEN FOOT HIGH CEILINGS (Ow, ow, ow!).
We did the whole job with a dinky rechargable drill/screwdriver, which got dropped the last day. So then we went out and bought one powerful enough to install drywall easily.
We've built a pair of chicken houses.
And I framed out & assembled a damp room for drying tiles under controlled humidity. I put a pic of the damp room in the tribe gallery. -

Re: What have you built?
Wed, March 31, 2004 - 9:47 AMI am working on a cd cabinet out of this beautiful redwood (used a router for the first time and it was love) and just built a few garden boxes in the back. In the past I have built a loft frame for my bed, bookshelf, foot stool, hung drywall and made shelves galore.
My first car when I was 16 was a 76 VW bus. I had to take the enginge out 4x in the two years I owned it. I didn't have a clue what I was doing, but with some guidance at times from friends, Dad and a few manuals I learned pretty quick. Replaced the transmision, then the clutch, then an over haul of the engine, then had to take it all apart again because a gasket slipped down when I had put the cylanders on the heads. My next car,Volvo, transmision again, radiator and a few other things. I don't let anyone touch my car. I'll have a fit. I've had guys push me out of the way to try to "fix" my car, when they didn't have a clue! If you want to help, hold the damn flashlight.
And about my Dad...He fucking rocks and it's not because he has lathes, bandsaws, table saws, drill press, and any other tool I might need AND lets me use. (and a driveway to fix my car in) Its because I can't remember one time that he has made me feel like I couldn't fix something or tried to "help". If I'm stuck and I ask, he is more than happy, but he doesn't take my projects from me or push me out of the way or say "you're not doing it right, whatcha need to do is...". My husband needs to learn those qualities quickly! -

Re: What have you built?
Wed, April 7, 2004 - 1:02 PMRecreational Mutant Bicycle.Dust, your dad rocks! My boyfriend loves to teach and not take over, too.
I am lucky, and fell in love with a man who owns a shop, and all manner of cool tools. He teaches me with great patience and has also given me "high bike fever."
So with his welding help, I am now assembling a 6 plus foot tall "high bike" called the Merry Widow. Basically she is a bike made of two bike frames welded on top of one another. This bike will go to Burning Man with me.
All sorts of bike building, metal grinding, parts hunting, junk pile rummaging, and cutting old ghetto bikes into lil tiny pieces have happened. I am not done with this project yet, and am already plotting the next.
I have to take my hat off to all of you here who have learned woodworking. I have yet to, and wish I could!

Re: What have you built?
Fri, April 23, 2004 - 11:22 PM
What have I built? Well my most recent project was a small island/bar. Since I have one of those odd shaped kitchens I needed a island no longer than 36 inches and no wider than 24 inches. I used granite floor tiles for the counter surface. The front has a foot rest so some one can come up to the "bar" and chat to the bartender. The back side has doors on either side and I modified a melamine shoe rack into a wine rack. Oh, and it's on wheels so it can also do duty as a buffet! Form follows function!

Re: What have you built?
Sat, May 8, 2004 - 1:49 PMI hate working on cars...trucks. but with my ex with the tools, and me with the mechanic's book, we've done a lot over the years. and I was scout the junkyards for parts, such as manifolds. But I did just pull the steering column on my Suburban and replace the ignition cylinder (key was sticking). and tool more tools on the last 4wd trip than my boyfriend wanted...so when my lug wrench turned up missing and we were in the wilderness, a giant crescent wrench, a 3# sledge and a file for the galled lug nuts did the trick.
we also built a 500 sft addition (clerestory), where we did all the work. I procured most of the materials, a lot used. ripped studs, Chop sawed cross-pieces, hammered, framed windows, insulation, hung and final-finished drywall, tore off old shingle roof and re-roofed, flashed and built the cricket adjoining the roofs, cut and sweated the plumbing, laid tile bathroom, laid slate livingroom, designed and dug and installed drip and sprinklers for my lush desert garden (28 different species trees), cleaned and laid used-brick apron walk.
repaired central air (new blower motor, capacitors).
still...favorite is still a drill motor! -

Re: What have you built?
Sat, May 8, 2004 - 9:47 PMI am waist deep in it. I recently finished the bathroom. I tore out the stall shower, built a wall put in an extra deep tub for my son Bliss and I, built up the three wall alcove, hand tiled the entire thing and put in a glass shower door and painted the bathroom. It is so awesome, Bliss LOVES it. Next I put in a kitchen bar with cabinets below it which was a fun easy lil job. Monday homo depot is dropping off a semi load for me. I am doing an entire new fence, 200 feet, and building a deck, then I am drywalling out the garage and re-putting in a window where it was stucco'd up, then I am putting in a raised garden, 15 x 8, and putting in a raised planter, retaining wall for curb appeal in the front yard up next to the house seperating it from the grass. I have spent a month tearing out 50 year old ivy in back for the fence, this included getting a great new chainsaw to cut into the ground to dig up roots, and a few stumps. After the fence is up I am doing a pond/water feature in the corner where the ivy was. I also have 15 cubic feet of topsoil in a 5.5 foot mound on my driveway to do all these things and level out a few areas of the yard.
whew..
I cannot wait to get through this list. I will be doing most next week.
As for tools I am in love with my chop saw/ table saw. I have two circ saws, two drills, a recip. saw I use a TON, I have a dremmel I use a lot and a rotary tool I don't, a chainsaw and a new wheel barrow. The things I adore are 1) getting some new tool for every new job it seems and 2) that when I am knee deep in a job and something comes up and I HAVE the tool I need to handle the unexpected. I don't know why but that just tickles me to no end. And 3) I recently got Bliss a lil homo depot tool kit with a circ saw, a drill, an electric driver, and some other adorable things. The thing work and make noise and turn and the GREAT thing is that he uses them, like the are meant to be used and he got ALL that from me. I am so amazed and touched by that. It is so sweet.
OK I am through gushing for now I need sleep because I have about 300 wheel barrow loads to move tomorrow.
Nite Nite

Fri, May 14, 2004 - 11:43 AMI'm prepping today to build this easel:
www.itg.uiuc.edu/people/gr...index.html
I figure if I use a decent wood it will look nice and actually I would like it to function as a piece of furniture in my living room. I plan on adding a box for brushes and bongs n things to the bottom of the canvas support and covering the base with something, slats, I dunno, for storing my art boxes and the hooka. just kidding. anyway, who wants to spend anywhere from $300 to $600 on an easel when you can make on like this that will hold anywhere from a rather smallish paiting up to a canvas big enough to do your self-portrait in life size fashion? wanna come over and paint?

Re: What have you built?
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 12:52 AMI've been in this group for over a year and I've never posted to it...I figured this thread was a good place to start.
Things I've built: Well, I used to own a couple of '77 Camaro's, and every other week something would break on them, so I've reattached mufflers, helped rebuild all sorts of engine parts, and just turned myself generally into a great big grease monkey. My crowning acheivement was pulling one of the Camaros up a driveway with a steel chain to get it into the garage. Okay, so I had a big ass hand-powered tool helping me, but it still made feel like fucking She-ra.
On the slightly less sexy and cool side, I built a whole lot of model airplanes when I was little, and I still build shit out of Legos when I get bored. Plus I built a (functional) DMT/mescaline lab when I was 19 (don't worry, it's been gone for a while). I built a treehouse by myself when I was ten, but it only had three walls and no roof...I still thought it was the greatest treehouse in the world though. I mean, I did until I fell out of it a couple times and decided to take it down with an axe.

Re: What have you built?
Sat, July 23, 2005 - 7:49 PMlots of stuff starting with a pair of stilts when I was ten...I was taking woodshop at school at the time so my dad gave me total access to his tools (but said he would *rather* I didn't use the table saw when I was home alone in case I had an accident and needed to go to the hospital.) So my brother had to come to me and nicely ask me to cut things out for him when he was building birdhouses.
i've built scenery for theater, art installations, used to live with a plumber so did all kinds of plumbing work...and rebuilt my first car, a '68 VW Squareback...overhauled the engine twice, rebuilt carbs and brakes, redid the whole interior...just sold her last summer on the sixteenth anniversary of the day i bought the car. I've got a 76 VW Westfalia camper now to tinker with but she runs great; I installed new shocks and temperature gauges and a stereo and replaced all the hoses.
I dig power tools! Putting those new shocks on the van was a snap with the air ratchet! bzaaaaaaam! and I do get off on bragging about fixing stuff on the VWs. drives the boys crazy. hahaha. but they STILL don't get to sleep with me in my sweet camper.
most recent thing I built is a fire hula hoop. six wicks on all-thread spokes. haven't lit it up yet but will happen soon...
man, after reading these posts I gotta take a welding class. I live with my brother so the home repair projects gotta meet his approval but I want to retile the hearth on the fireplace, build a mantel for it and install a proper glass door on it so it doesn't keep blowing soot into the living room and getting everything all filthy. you women totally inspire me!
oh, and I gotta acknowledge my dad. He was always willing to help me, would let me use his tools (I always put them back, too, something my brother didn't learn how to do) and would help me re-design something without making me feel stupid. Gave me a toolbox for my tenth birthday and another one when I turned twenty-one. I still have them both. -

Re: What have you built?
Fri, February 3, 2006 - 12:22 PMHi, I'm new to this tribe (first post, anyway), so I thought this would be a good topic to introduce myself.
The first thing I built: sewed a pair of slippers when I was 5 (ain't that cute)-- followed closely by the acquisition of an erector set for my 6th Christmas. I was the son that my dad never had, I guess, so I got to help with holding the boards, getting the hammer, etc. My dad had a strange way of motivating me: I'd see something I wanted to make, he'd say "pshaw! you can't do that!", then he would take me to the leathershop/lumberyard/craft store to get whatever it would take to make it. Started a life-time of self-esteem and "I'll show you" issues, but I guess it's better than "you can't do that- now go away."
So, fast forward-- learned to sew in home-ec. They wouldn't let me take wood shop (it was only for the guys in the 70's). Made a lot of intricate little saddles, carts and other equine things during my extended teenage "horse-phase". When I was in college, I started climbing, and noticing that there was no such thing as women's climbing gear or clothing, started a little business called "InCline Designs" (my last name is Cline-- you gotta start the company once you come up with a name like that, eh?). Made outdoor clothes for clients who included petite doctors' wives who were going on exotic trips to Equador and Tibet with their husbands, and needed clothing that fit. I'd take stuff that was on the rack (NorthFace, etc), rip it to parts, scale down the pieces, and re-assemble. Learned how technical gear and clothing was designed that way.
Then got into woodworking-- once you get past the part where the equipment will maim you much more thoroughly than a sewing machine, it's pretty much working with fabric that doesn't drape as well.
Then, I went to BurningMan. The rest, as they say, is history. I've made (either by myself or collaboratively) domes, EL wire installations ("Pushing Man", which was attached behind a rickshaw and had legs on sequencers, so it looked, from across the playa, like a little man was walking behind something and pushing it. As you would expect, the *reason* I created it is a whole 'nother story). Made an EL wire bra (again with sequencers) that looks like hands pinching nipples (again another creation story for another time). The electrical projects are all done with a friend who actually enjoys soldering little teeny tiny wires. For some reason, that little art is just not for me. My latest creation for Burning Man, again collaboratively with someone who became a great friend an "co-McGyver" during the process, was "The Zion Curtain", which was about a 30-foot high theatre curtain with an electrical sign, made of suspended ropework, and which was the front gateway for the Utah Burner's Camp (you might have seen us on Catharsis between 5:00 and 5:30). I also do a lot of costumes, lately in collaboration with members of the tribe I belong to in Salt lake City (check us out on tribe at AMOTribe)
Other than that, I've been rennovating my house (by myself, dammit ;- ) for the past two years. Did my kitchen last summer (granite tile counter with glass mosaic tile edging and backsplash, granite tile entry way, lighting, etc), and now I'm working on my bathroom. More tile, and building the vanity and woodwork in a woodshop class because a) I've got a bad case of champagne taste and beer budget, b) I know exactly what I want, and of course I can't get anyone to build it for me for less than a whole pile o' money, and c) because I can. And once I get the floor in and the fixtures re-mounted, I'll actually be able to take a shower in there for the first time since I moved in two years ago! I'm planning on draining the entire hot-water heater! ;- )
So, in short, I own more power tools than most men, and I'm looking for a man who considers that sexy! ;- > Either that, or (and) some more good friends to create things with!

Re: What have you built?
Sun, September 24, 2006 - 11:51 PMA Log Cabin. Another house . Everything just about. I was the first woman in the local carpnters union up here in northern N.Y. I also had a book in the Painters Union where I finished drywall on stilts or off. I broke my neck a while back but I still 'scew' around. I need to turn a room into a pottery pretty soon! Kinda busy cutting fire wood and canning right now. -

Re: What have you built?
Fri, January 12, 2007 - 7:41 PMSince I have a book addiction, I've built countless bookshelves over the years. I think I can build bookshelves in my sleep.
I've built a computer desk, a cutting table for my sewing room (the sewing machine is just another power tool), a coffee table, and several of those little Moroccan-style octagonal tables. I've built little houses for the cats to put in the yard. I've built two dictionary stands--one for upstairs, one for downstairs.
I scavenge old furniture, take it apart, and rebuild it to suit. I stripped a ratty old sofa I found on the street, modified the frame so it would have a different shape, then reupholstered it. A year later, I found a chair in an alley with similar arms, took it home, and re-tooled it to match the couch. I also took an oversized entertainment center a friend was getting rid of and cut it down to a smaller size that would fit in my bedroom. I love seeing the potential in a piece of ugly or beat-up furniture, and then bringing it to life.
I'm currently building a bed, based on an ornate Chinese "opium"/wedding bed I saw in an antique store. I'm also going to re-tile my kitchen counters and floor this summer, and install box beams and moldings in my dining room, too.
I build stuff or re-make it because I'm either too cheap to buy overpriced junk ready-made, or else I can't find what I want in stores at any price. People are always amazed at the stuff I build; I'm always amazed that they think it's so damned difficult.

Re: What have you built?
Fri, January 12, 2007 - 8:48 PMNothing too extraordinary, but the sum of the tasks has been quite transforming in my bedroom:
Finally pieced the short end of an old, damaged bedskirt to the 4th side of the new bedskirt, cause my bed fits into a weird corner where a long side is against the wall and both ends are in view.
Framed and hung several pictures and posters, including 2 autographed by Alex Grey(!!!!) Made a few collages of photos and memorabilia to hang in my office, LR, BR. Bought new rugs for BR and office. Soft wool down there makes me do more push-ups!
Over the summer, with a carpenter, designed and built a 3-sided workstation in my office, just got a new chair(eBay score!). We also hung an Air Chair at the foot of my bed--carefully sinking that lag bolt into a joist.
Repotted plants, re-arranged vines, got rid of a LOT of clutter. . . Every week or so, I dig a hole in the back yard to bury the kitchen waste for compost.
Still have a bunch more clutter and craft stuff to toss and organize, but I've really made a big dent, and I might just finish this house before the end of this year!

Re: What have you built?
Mon, August 27, 2007 - 7:48 PMI did a whole copper re-pipe on our house. Installed a second shower head in the bathroom. Just finished making a frame for a 6' mirror we have. And I am going to move on to making all the furniture for my girls' room (tv cabinet, bookshelf, toy chest, etc)
I do also love working on my car. Nothing better then getting greasy and sweaty. Talk about empowering, and sexy!
