The customization of my 14.4v Makita drill was dual-purpose:

1) I was working on a huge art project for a few months before Burning Man, as well as at the Burn, and wanted my drill to be distinctive and hard to steal, and easy to remember which were my batteries on the charger!

2) I like pink. Hardass, shiny, vulgar bright pink. Not on my lips, not really on my body so much these days, not on my notebooks or my car or my accessories. But on my drill? Fuck yeah.

I can't imagine, however, buying tools marketed at women. The quality always stinks. My Makita drill was outperforming the DeWalts on site, it's a much better balanced tool with an awesome battery life.

My mechanic/instructor painted a stripe of pink nail polish on all his snap-on tools so they'd be harder for his students to steal. I mark mine with purple nail polish. ;-)

The only reason I'd want to have outrageous colored tools is to keep my husband away from them....he's a bull in china shop when it comes to any kind of tool. And he never puts them away - which makes me crazy. I'll buy him all the 'toy' tools he wants, I just want him to stay away from mine!

I actually knew of a man who bought the whole set as a joke (he doesn't actually use them to get anything done).
Some men I know have pink dollies or other pink things and it is insulting sort of in the same way that macho straight men find the experience of crossdressing (I'm talking ridiculous wigs and snagged leggings- raunch) really exciting and hilarious- it is a mockery of the woman.

You know... if a reputable, KNOWN tool company were to design a line of hand and power tools that were maybe scaled down to accomodate a woman's smaller hand... but keep the same level of quality in their tools... it would not be a bad thing. I know not all women have that problem, but I know plenty of gals that love to work with power tools, but struggle because they have difficulty holding it, pushing the button, etc. because the tools are too big for their tiny hands. Or even the weight might be awkward for some.

But NO PINK!!!!! No flowery patterns, or anything to make them 'girly'... yech! They obviously don't do their market research if they think that all women like that crap. Make mine purple! With bright orange flames!!

Sorry, I'm with Arcadia.
They mercantized breast cancer (turning it all fuzzy oogly warm and pink) and now they're doing it to tools.
Man, let go of my tools and keep your pink frickin' paint away!

I want my tools to last.
I buy good ones with a good history behind 'em.
...and I'm not even 'in the trade'. I just need 'em to work when I need 'em to work!

Now back away from the plasma cutter, honey. I'm about to switch it on.

Umm - have you actually tried any of these tools or are you just making generalizations? I can attest to the quality of these tools and not just because they have a pink handle. If you really want to know, past of the proceeds go to benefit breast cancer research. I do not see your tool companies trying to help breast cancer from affecting the lives of your wife, mother or sister. At least this company is..

first this is spam. second tomboy tools are toys not tools. as a framer for 5 years, finish carpenter for another 5 years and now a contractor i can tell you a screwdriver with a pink handle or light blue handle doesn't work any better than a just a plain old screwdriver from your hardware store. in fact i find those "women" only tools lacking in strength, they break easily. You want a hammer? go buy yourself a Stiletto, need a level, Stabila makes a damn good one! Buy real tools ladies, not these made in China cheap tools marketed to you.

if you're too intimadated to walk into a hardware store and buy real tools then perhaps you should get out of the trade.
