My 9-year-old Sony TV made a funny pffft sound and the screen went dark. The sound remains functional. Channels change, the remote turns it on and off, but I have no picture. I just hate throwing something away if it can be fixed. How do I tell if it's the picture tube or what?

I second what Chili said... and especially the "consider yourself saved" part
It may seem a bit strange at first... kind of like a guest, whether welcomed or unwelcomed, when they depart... you notice the void, but then you appreciate the calm... and the freedom -

Fri, May 12, 2006 - 7:03 AMOh, I didn't need the TV to break to have calm, I know where the off switch is. It was just a rather good TV that connected more easily than the other TV to the stuff like DVD and VCR. It is good to throw away one, there were 4 in the house, now we're down to 3. <G> It's a big house. And I hate to throw anything away that can be fixed or re-purposed. But I appreciate your confirmation that it's time for the trash for this one. -

Re: kill your tv
Sat, May 13, 2006 - 9:28 AMIt's important also to be aware that because the picture tune glass contains lead and the electronics have other toxic metals, TV's should be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner. Your local recycling center should be able to give you the scoop on ehat to do with it or where to take it.
Peace,
