I just got a dremel. I was planning to use it to carve details in plaster molds for decorative tile. (Like, say, tentacles on a jellyfish.) I'm having a hell of a time controlling the thing. All my carving efforts have been like drunk driving. Whoaaaaaaa!!!
Anybody experienced with a dremel? Any suggestions?

Re: How does this thing work?
Wed, January 14, 2004 - 3:45 PMThere is a guard attachment you can buy. Spacing on the name at the moment but I think I got it with a tile cutting bit. You set it like on a drill press so you can not press any deeper. For the hand motions you are on your own. Start with a slower speed on the bit to make it easier to control and practice, practice, practice. -

Re: Practice, practice, Practice
Wed, January 14, 2004 - 4:02 PMYeah, I figured. This would be a hand-motion thing. Thankfully, I'm cutting the plaster mold to use with wet clay, not cutting fired tiles.
I've poured a bunch of plaster practice "tablets". It's a bitch to control, you have to take into account the direction of rotation as you carve. I can do straight lines pretty good, even some curves, esses okay, but circles no way... I'd hoped there was a super secret special technique... -

Circles:
What you do is carve a square (or a small circular-ish) hole) in the middle of the hole. Then cut straight lines go out to about 1/4" away from the inside edge of the larger circle. Cut enough to create narrow flaps in the hole, then cut the flaps off. Use your grinding tool to smooth the hole out. It helps to get some sticky plastic (like what airbrush people use) to outline the hole so you don't over-grind.
Hope this helps.
